The same can be said of alternative heating. WHERE you live is the most important factor in determining which alternative heating or cooling option is most cost effective for your home.
Alternative Heat Pumps
Even if you owned a million dollar townhouse in Boston’s Back Bay, there just isn’t enough room on a 25′ x 100′ lot for a townhouse, small deck, a couple of parking spaces AND a closed loop geothermal heating system.

However, a roof top solar system for hot water would be doable if you could get the idea past the Historical Preservation groups.

If you live in high humidity Alabama, the environmentally friendly swamp cooler will never be a viable substitute for more expensive air conditioning.

Only when you narrow down the choices for alternative heating based on where you live, can you begin to focus your time and energy on the most relevant, cost effective heating solution.

Urban Alternative Heating

Unvented gas log fireplaces or propane space heaters are less expensive to purchase and install but are controversial with respect to health risks and are prohibited in some localities. Make sure the unit you purchase has an ODS (Oxygen Depletion Sensor). This safety device turns off the heater when the oxygen in the room drops below 18%. (Normal is around 21%)

At approximately $5000, the outdoor furnace is your least expensive option. A quality 1,800 watt wind turbine and tower can be purchased for $7,000. If geothermal is your system of choice, a new, 3,000 sq. ft. home can be heated and cooled for around $20,000.

If you partner with a program such as Energy Crafted Home in Connecticut, it’s possible to receive a rebate of $713 per ton of geothermal heating/cooling capacity. For the 3,000 sq. ft. home just mentioned, it would mean a rebate totaling $2,971.

Although wind, geothermal and outdoor furnace systems are more expensive than the typical $2000 wood pellet stove, they are very efficient and pay for themselves in only a few years.

The increasingly popular manufactured home is a growing segment of the suburban real estate market, and fire safety codes are very specific as to what you can use to heat your home.

Check with your local building department to find out exactly which alternative heating appliances are permitted before you start shopping for the best deal.

Two of the bigger energy uses are cooling and heating. Green heating systems are designed to minimize such energy use during cooler periods.
There are several heating systems used in green homes. One type uses geothermal energy for heat. Geothermal refers to using the natural heat of the earth. Most systems work by running water from under the earth through a series of pipes called a loop. The loop takes the water to a heat exchanger where the heat is removed from the water and used for heating purposes. The most simple is the open loop. Since ground water generally maintains a constant temperature, water is pumped from one well through a heat exchange device, and deposited into a second well, usually at a distance from the first.

A closed loop geothermal system circulates the water through a series of pipes. The pipes are buried in the ground and the water picks up heat and the heat exchanger removes it. There are several arrangements of piping, but the general idea is the same. Although geothermal heat is very inexpensive, a system has to be fairly extensive to provide all of a homes heating requirements, and most systems are intended to supplement other heating sources.

A much better source of heat is sunlight. Solar power systems convert sunlight to heat for use in space heating and domestic water heating. Most solar power systems have a very high initial cost, but a very low operating cost. This low operating cost is often overlooked in the planning stages when more attention is being paid to the initial costs. In order to maximize the advantages of the low operating cost, it is important to make sure that the home is well insulated. In the case of water heating systems, all pipes must be heavily insulated.

Solar water heating systems can be either passive or active. Passive systems use natural convection to move water from the heat source to the heat exchange point. An active system uses pumps and controllers. The water is collected in a tank fitted with solar panels or heat absorbing materials where it is warmed by sunlight. The pumps move it to a heat exchanger where the heat is removed and circulated through the home. In the case of a water heater, the water can be used directly, and it is replaced by cold water from the existing water supply.

Geothermal and Solar heating systems are two examples of green construction types of alternative sources for heat and energy. The advantage is the reducing of the reliance on fossil fuel generated heat or energy. The technology for utilizing these sources of heat is still in its infancy. It is expected that the rise in green construction philosophy will encourage further experimentation in this area.

What Exactly Is Geothermal Energy?

The term ‘geothermal’ has been derived from two Greek words, ‘geo’, which means the earth and ‘therme’, which means heat. The hot water and steam that are produced within the earth can be used for generating electricity and heating buildings. Therefore, geothermal energy is a renewable source of energy since the heat is produced continuously within the earth and the rainfall replenishes the water.

Geothermal Heating From Inside The Earth

The core of the earth, which is about 4000 miles below the surface, is where geothermal energy is generated. Temperatures that can sometimes be even hotter than the surface of the sun are produced incessantly within the earth by radioactive particles decaying slowly, a process that occurs in all rocks. The earth is made up of a number of layers: the core; the mantle; and the crust.

  • The Core: The core of the earth itself comprises of two layers – an outer layer which is made up of extremely hot molten rock, known as magma, and an inner core made of solid iron.
  • The Mantle: This layer, which comprises of rock and magma, envelopes the core and has a thickness of around 1800 miles.
  • The Crust: The earth’s outermost layer is called the crust, which basically comprises of all the land that makes up the floor of the oceans and the continents. The crust is about 15-35 miles in thickness on the continents and of about 3-5 miles in thickness beneath the oceans.

The hot magma from deep down below rises up close to the surface of the earth at the junctures of these plates. These are the places where volcanoes are formed. The lava that spews from volcanoes is made up partly of magma. The heat from this magma is absorbed by the water and rocks that occur deep beneath the earth’s surface. The temperature of the water and the rocks get increasingly hotter the deeper down you go below the earth’s surface.

People all over the world have been using geothermal energy to heat their homes by digging wells that go down very deep and pumping up the hot steam or water to the surface.

Generating Geothermal Power

As has been explained above, superheated substances in the form of magma, that contains enormous energy and power, which is quite evident every time a volcano erupts, can be tapped for creating geothermal power. Some of these substances also rise to the surface in the form of hot water and steam, which spew out from natural vents. Therefore, we can make artificial vents as well as create containment chambers where the magma can be kept, and turn all this geothermal energy into electricity, which can be used to heat and light our homes. In order to set up a geothermal power plant, a well will have to be dug where there is a good source of superheated fluid or magma. Pipes would then be fitted, which would go down into the source, and then the fluids would be forced up to the surface in order to produce the required steam. This steam would then be used to rotate a turbine engine, thus generating electricity, or geothermal power.

These days, there is an increasing concern as well as awareness of the necessity of using sources of power that are not carbon-based. This is quite evident by Al Gore and the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) winning the Nobel Peace Prize recently. Here are some of the advantages of geothermal energy:

  • Geothermal energy does not create any pollution because it is the earth’s energy that is used.
  • Geothermal energy is also very efficient, because after a site is located and a geothermal power plant is built, the efforts required to channel it are negligible.
  • Moreover, there is no necessity of geothermal power plants to be as large in sized as atomic power plants, huge dams, and electrical plants, thus there is less impact on the environment.
  • Plus, it is an alternative source of energy, which means that by using it we get less dependent on coal and oil.
  • Perhaps the most important advantage of geothermal energy is that, unlike energy derived from carbon-based sources, geothermal energy will never run out. And because it is ubiquitous, its cost will never continue to rise with time. Hence, after the costs of the investigation to seek out the source and building the power plant are recouped, in the end, geothermal energy will be very cheap.

The heated air is then pushed through ductwork throughout the house by a circulating fan.

The main advantages to this type of heating system are many. The furnace, depending on size and energy source can create the highest efficiency for certain types of homes.

The unit also can accommodate a dual purpose in that it can also serve as the central source for air conditioning and ventilation as well – the only one of these heating systems that can do so. Forced air can also integrate such add-ons as filtration and humidification units.

Forced air systems can, however, have some drawbacks. The units generally require more maintenance than others. They also require an extensive system of ducts in even small homes. Ducts can take up space, alter designs and can be difficult to reach to clean and service. For small to medium homes, these units generally provide the highest efficiency at the lowest cost.

Radiant Heat

radiant heat water pumpOne of the most popular new systems is radiant or ambient heat. Generally, it can come in the form of a hot water tube embedded in a floor or wall – although a radiant heating system can also refer to wood or coal stoves, fireplaces or other fuel-burning heating systems placed in the open.
The advantages to radiant heat are many, but so are the disadvantages. In the case of tubing laid in the floor or wall, the heat is uniform and consistent throughout the home. Architectural design is not affected as it is an "invisible" heat source, allowing for wide design choices. However, if repairs are needed, the system poses severe problems with access and potential structural upheaval.

The heating cycle is slow, as well, so it is not recommended for spaces with rapid, repeating and extreme temperature changes. Ambient heat does not offer a ventilation or air conditioning option at all. Ambient heat offers a high installation cost and a potentially very high repair cost. But the boiler heating the system, if chosen wisely, can offer a very high efficiency factor.

Hot Water Radiant

Usually knows as "hot water baseboard" heating systems, this heating option pushes hot water through tubing (usually copper) installed at the bottom of each room’s walls. The heat is circulated purely through convection, meaning that no ventilation or circulating device is needed, making the system very quiet.

While the system offers high efficiency at low installation cost, the structure can impede certain designs in homes. Repair is not usually a consideration. As with ambient or radiant heat, the choice of the boiler usually determines the efficiency of this particular style of home heating system.

Again, a separate air conditioning and ventilation unit is required.

Steam Radiant

Similar to hot water radiant, steam radiant uses a series of pipes or tubes to warm the home through convection. While the system is still in use in some older construction and in some European homes, this system is not used much in the United States.

Also similar to water radiant, the system can be very efficient when the proper type of boiler is used and powered by an appropriate fuel source which may include propane, oil, electricity or alternate energy. An air conditioning and ventilation system would be a separate system entirely.

Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal Heat Pumps (GHPs) are unlike either Forced Air or Radiant heat entirely – and are perhaps the most exciting new technology offered in home heating systems. The concept of a GHP is to take heat or cold and to displace it by using long pipes running into the ground. Since the ground at the buried depth is normally a fairly consistent (and comfortable) temperature, the heat or cold is displaced, returning a comfortable temperature to the home.

The advantages are enormous efficiencies and savings – in the range of upwards of 70% over other heating or cooling sources. However, the cost and construction can be prohibitive to achieve these efficiencies. Certain home sites may not be able to take advantage of this system, and maintenance can be extremely high.

Which is Right For You?

Each system does offer advantages and disadvantages to each potential homeowner. Taking these all into consideration, particularly selection, maintenance and repair, as well as response time for service or an emergency should all be taken into consideration.

Negatives Of Using Geothermal For Your Home

Using the inherent heat in the ground, geothermal, is being pushed by many experts as a great energy source. While this is generally true, there are some negatives as well.

Advocates of alternative energy tend to become emotionally attached to one source and discount others. In truth, the answer to replacing fossil fuels is a combination of alternative energy platforms. Let’s take a look at the problems associated with geothermal energy.

First and foremost, there is an economic problem with using ground energy. Geothermal systems can be very pricey. Although prices vary by brand and location, installing a geothermal system in a building or residence will almost always cost more than a traditional heating and cooling system.

Familiarity is an additional problem. Much like owning an exotic car, a geothermal system is unique. If it breaks or has problems, getting it repaired can be difficult and expensive. Unlike with a plumbing problem, you are probably not going to be able to call a geothermal repairman in the middle of the night when the systems stops working.

To use geothermal energy, a residence must often already have electricity to run the pumps or mechanisms that transfer geothermal heat from the ground to the home. Spending $50 a month to run your system more or less defeats the purpose.

Finally, geothermal heating systems for houses use liquid to transfer heat to and from the ground. This liquid is often a refrigerant of some type, which can be toxic. On the other hand, systems using water do not have this problem.

Overall, geothermal is definitely a part of the solution to fossil fuels. Advocates, however, need to acknowledge it is not the end all solution.

My favorite alternative cooling device is a gin and tonic. It’s portable, easy to operate and provides instant on-demand refreshment.

Is there such a thing as a Tanqueray energy tax credit?

Although you can install solar panels, a wind turbine or micro hydro to generate the electricity to run an air conditioner, the only true whole house alternative cooling method is a geothermal ground source pump.

The cost of this type of system can be recouped in as little as two years on a new house installation, but the initial capital outlay is more than most homeowners can afford.

Let’s say you re-mortgage your house for $20,000 and you have a choice between a new kitchen and a geothermal heat pump; how many new heat pumps have your neighbors been showing off lately? Heat pump prices can vary depending on many factors.

Less expensive options to consider:

Fans

Radiant Barriers
These shiny, reflective barriers keep excess heat out of your attic in the summer or keeping your floors warm in the winter. Stapled under the rafters or joists, it reflects 97 of the radiant heat that strikes it. The non-profit Florida Solar Energy Center has shown that an attic radiant barrier can reduce air conditioning costs by at least 20%.

Clean the filter once a month. Turn off your A/C when you leave for more than an hour. It saves money. Draw the shades while you’re at work. Close off unused rooms or, if you have central A/C, close the registers in those rooms and shut the doors.

Set your A/C thermostat at 78For higher if you have ceiling fans. For each degree you raise the thermostat, you’ll save 3%-5% on cooling costs.

If you want to make a fortune in alternative cooling, invent an air conditioner that runs on corn.

Evaporative Water Cooler – This Water Cooled Condensing Unit Is No Swamp Cooler

This unique cooling technology from Freus, shouldn’t be confused with a swamp cooler. Although water is used to assist with the cooling, it is sprayed over condensing coils rather than pads.

The water cooled condensing unit is a residential application of the 250 ton split system chillers already used by commercial buildings. Think of this technology as a mini-chiller for residential use.

Water removes heat from the condenser coils far more efficiently than air. This reduces the temperature of the compressed R-22 refrigerant, which in turn reduces the work load of the scroll compressor. Not only will the compressor last much longer, there is only a minimal loss of cooling efficiency when the outdoor temperature exceeds 100 degrees.

Typical air cooled units can lose as much as 25% of their efficiency at the same temperature.

How much can you save with a water cooled condensing unit?
Charles Mullin, a casino worker who lives in North Las Vegas is also single. So every utility bill comes from his lone paycheck. That’s why he switched the air conditioning system on his 1,500-square-foot home to a water cooled condensing unit.

"Before I installed it, I had my thermostat set at 75 to 78 degrees to try to keep my electric bills down," he said. "I tested the new system at 65 degrees – felt like a meat locker. My bill went down to $86. That’s about a 45-percent savings and the house was set cooler."

Richard Waite, president of Hal Mechanical, installer of Mr. Mullin’s water cooled AC, said they are specifically made for the desert climate.

‘The only extra that’s needed to swap out an old air conditioning unit for a new water-cooled one is to run a water line to it. The unit has an automated system, similar to a toilet tank, keeping the water at the correct capacity. The system also flushes itself to avoid calcium buildup.’

Due to the almost constant capacity, the condenser size does not need to vary due to climate zones, like air-cooled units. The Freus is installed in much the same manner as an air-cooled condenser and has the unique ability to service multiple air handlers. This provides the space saving convenience of housing two or three compressors (up to 10 total tons) in a single cabinet.

Jim Kilby of Green Valley, a casino management professor, replaced his 10-year-old air conditioning units, one 5-ton and one 3-ton, with two water-cooled ones of roughly the same capacity. He figures his electric bills dropped by a third.

"The hotels have been using this technology for years," Kilby said. "When you think about it, water does a better job of cooling the air than air. It just makes sense."

Whether you call them evaporative water coolers or water cooled condensing units, this mini version of the 250 ton chiller is sure to revolutionize desert cooling.
